Five Card Stud, Nothing Wild... and the Sky's the Limit!

What to do? Economists and Politicians and Everyone wonders what is the right policy to change the course of events.

Unfortunately, I see the present as a generation-long big old Poker Tournament: we're playing five-card, just as the crew of the Enterprise does so often in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Lady Luck deals us one card down and one card up. We bet our hands, and she slowly, very, very, slowly deals us another card up - to be followed by another round of betting - and continues on this way until we reach a total of five cards in each players hand.
We are playing with billions of players.

Each time Fortune gives us our next card, the Dealer provides commentary like "No help there!" and "Possible flush!"  Economists and politicians mumble in the background. It gives the illusion of freedom.
Actually all the cards have already been dealt out, and most of us are already fully in the game and have anted up and bet our shirts; what we are seeing is a documentary video of that in slow motion. The deck had been stacked and the cards all dealt out and bets placed; now we go forward to our pre-determined end.
