As a child, I was lost
in the carpets that filled
the house of my grandmother -
I would not leave
the gardens steeped
in chocclate incense.

I didn't know my grandma, but I have a lot of her things. I know her through them. Carpets are some of them. When we lived in Istanbul and Don studied carpets while selling them back to the U.S., we were in awe of the designs and methods for making them. Those small child hands that weave the tight chocolate incense.

My grandmother was as intricate as her carpets, more so.

chocolate is incense for our mouths...
an embrace is incense of the body...
a carpet is incense for the eyes of wonder.
