Gil Scott-Heron

He was a benevolent Jinn.

When I read "Whitey's On The Moon", suddenly I understood a good deal more than I had 2 minutes before I had started reading. The horizon moved back a few thousand miles and hundreds of years. I saw things.

If I could put a universe in some such nutshell as could Mr. Scott-Heron...

He (Scott-Heron) was born to me only when he died. Imagine, I had not heard 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' before then. Now I can't get enough.

It is an amazing grace that gives us such treasures... and we do not see them for such a long time.

What other things are we blinded to? What things do we not see? I think society and its comm-networks distort reality way too much now.

Agreed.

When we lost power for two days in the heavy winds two Sundays ago, I felt unsettled. Not angry, not frustrated, but wondered what was wrong in me. It got me thinking about essentials. This came around the time of Scott-Heron's death, and when that had occurred and I saw it on friends' blogs, I felt panic almost, what else did I not know of? Of course: a lot. But what 'essential' had I missed. So when I posted about the power loss, and my unsettledness, and thinking about what I need for soul survival, I decided to ask blog friends what their essential music is. It turned into a wonderful list, and I am listening through it. We have to talk in these ways to keep real, and not let the comm-networks tell us what to think, feel, watch, buy, listen to, believe, yadayada.

That is an interesting idea, actually: to listen to someone else's favorite music and really listen with an attempt at true sympathy - to dance a hundred miles in someone else's mocassins (or whatever).

I think my favorite might be the soundtrack from "Oh, Brother! Where Art Thou?"
I am drawn to rebirth, second chances, forgiveness, and God's own handshake.
