Trickster Figures In Myth

Coyote The Cunning

Myths and stories need the Trickster figure to incorporate an element of Play and Cunning into Creation.

Since most myths conceive of God or the Creator as being very sober and very staid, essentially being One who creates the rules and pretty much follows them.
So we need the rule-breaker, the prankster, the cunning weasel who escapes by thinking outside the box of Creation.

It is unseemly for us to think of God as playful or cunning. That would never do. The crux of the problem is in our "thinking" and "imagining" God at all, but the brain is an unruly organ that bends us to its will.
